Project for 2010

meet the team

Through interviewing workers of the flower farm last summer we learnt many things. An alarmingly large proportion of the health problems the locals face are avoidable. These include malaria, water-borne diseases, sexually transmitted diseases and those caused by a poor diet. There are also disabling illnesses that recognised early could be treated. The reason that these diseases are so prevalent and left to develop is the communities lack of knowledge on these topics. We feel that, in addition to accessible and affordable healthcare, this is a significant barrier to good health.

We immediately flagged-up this problem as something that we needed to address and this year we are excited to be able to go back with this as our main agenda.
The Swahili word “funzo” means to teach, and this is at the core of our project for this year.   We will be working with the doctor and nurse from the clinic to organise and run health education sessions with the locals, hoping to promote health awareness and to teach the locals about the many things they can do to protect their families from disease and illness. We should also be able to enable people to recognise symptoms and to help them to understand what to do in situations.

The sessions we plan to provide are:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Nutrition
  • Malaria
  • Water-borne diseases
  • Hygiene
  • STD's, HIV and AIDS awareness

We hope that the nurse will carry this health promotion forward after we have left.

Review

Another focus of the Funzo Project 2010 is reviewing the progress of the clinic. We really want to ensure that it is meeting the needs of the workers. We will talk with as many of them as possible in order to become aware of any improvements we could make to the clinic. We will also be looking into how the clinic could become increasingly financially self-sustainable.

The main objectives of The Funzo Project are:

  • To run workshops on different health issues
  • To review the work of the clinic and the needs of the workers
  • To improve the facilities at the clinic
To initiate the clinic's development towards being financially self-sufficient
