Project for 2010

meet the team

The Katoto Crèche Initiative is a student-led sister project to the Funzo Project. During our initial time in Kenya it was realised that one of the problems affecting the people was the care of young children. People experience such financial hardship that mothers are unable to take the time off work to care for their children, often leaving them to be cared for by elderly grandparents or carers within the community. However, these carers are often looking after up to 20 children at any one time and inevitably they can not all be looked after to as full an extent as is required. Because the mothers are working, they are also unable to breastfeed for much of the day, meaning children do not receive enough nutrition or the natural immune protection transferred from mother to child in breast milk.

The result of the situation is that a number of children suffer from conditions such as malnutrition and infections (such as pneumonia) due to a lowered immune response, and a lack of individual attention to pick up any problems early on. Children are also housed indoors for much of the day, meaning that many do not receive enough vitamin D and are suffering from rickets.

These problems have lead to some mothers having to leave work, putting them in even more extreme financial difficulty. We are hoping to prevent all of this from happening.

To achieve this we have gathered a new team of experienced and enthusiastic volunteers to help the cause! Please see their team profile page for individual details! The aims of the team are as follows:

  • Interview workers to find out what they need from a childcare facility
  • Research childcare at the local orphanage and primary schools
  • Hire and train staff for the crèche
  • • Construct/convert a building for use
  • Design and commission construction of any furniture by local craftsmen
  • Buy any required toys and equipment
  • Organise lunch making facilities for balanced meals
  • Organise a flexible syllabus for the crèche, involving both indoor and outdoor play, as well as educational games for the older children
  • Arrange for the nurse from the clinic to do regular checkups at the crèche
  • Fundraise enough money before going to make all of these objectives possible!
