Morop Flowers: Bahati Health Project June 2009

In June 2009 Bobbie, Olly and Lyndsey went to Bahati in Kenya to set up a health care clinic for the workers of a local flower farm. The locals had previously been struggling with the availability and price of quality health care.

Here is what they have to say about the project;

“Our first week out there was crammed full of introductions, interviews, meetings and planning sessions. We never seemed to stop - the moment one working day was over we were making plans for the next until the early hours. Despite being very tired at times our enthusiasm never waivered. We were spurred on by the obvious need and our growing friendship with the locals.

“We discovered the problems and needs of the farm workers and their families by talking to many of them individually. Following this we planned the layout of the clinic and designed the furniture it required in order for us to then meet with a local craftsman and commission him to build these for us.  After appointing a part-time doctor and a full-time nurse and discussing with them the day-to-day running of the clinic, we ordered the drugs that the clinic needs before finally cleaning, painting and kitting it all out.

“After three weeks and once everything was in place, we held our grand opening ceremony! Work on the farm stopped early and we welcomed our guests of honour - the owner’s wife and baby daughter. With a few speeches and the cutting of the ribbon out of the way, the workers were free to excitedly explore their brand new, albeit very small, clinic.

“We would like to thank everybody who was involved in the fundraising for this project! We really appreciate your kind generosity that made the clinic possible!”

Whilst in Kenya the team learned all about the many challenges that the people of Bahati face – with regards to healthcare and other aspects of their lives. We are really looking forward to expanding the Bahati Health Project for summer 2010.

Having spoken to the workers on the farm, two different and pressing needs were identified:

  • Education about common and preventable health problems
  • Good quaility childcare in the Bahati area

For this reason the Bahati Health Project is this year splitting into two separate yet complimentary projects - the Funzo Project and the Katoto Crèche Initiative.
